Crypto Scammers Hack Popular Tech Channels on YouTube

On March 23, 2023, Linus Tech Tips, TechLinked, and Techquickie, three popular YouTube channels, were hacked by an unknown attacker. The hacker used a session hijacking attack to gain access to the channels and took control of them for several hours. During that time, the hacker renamed the channels to promote crypto scams and live-streamed fake Elon Musk videos.

The attack was discovered when fans of the channels noticed the unusual content being posted and reported it to Linus Sebastian, the founder of Linus Media Group, which owns the channels. Sebastian immediately contacted YouTube, which took down the channels and launched an investigation into the hack.

According to YouTube, the hacker was able to gain access to the channels by using a session hijacking attack. This type of attack involves stealing the session cookies of a user who is logged in to a website or service. Once the attacker has the session cookies, they can use them to impersonate the user and access their account without needing to know the user's login credentials.

In this case, it's not clear how the hacker was able to obtain the session cookies of the channels' owners, but it's possible that they used a phishing attack or exploited a vulnerability in YouTube's systems.

After the attack was discovered, YouTube restored the channels to their rightful owners and issued a statement saying that they take security very seriously and are working to prevent similar attacks in the future.

Linus Sebastian, the founder of Linus Media Group, also issued a warning to users to be careful about what links they click on, as this type of attack can happen to anyone.
